How Do I Know When a Sold-Out Product Is Back in Stock on Shopify (Without Paying for an App)?
Use the free Shopify Flow app. Its "Product variant back in stock" trigger fires when a variant goes from zero (or less) to above zero, so a workflow with that trigger, a check that the product is active, and a "Send internal email" action tells you the moment a sold-out item returns. It works on Shopify Basic with no paid app. What Flow can't do on its own is email the shoppers who were waiting: its email action only sends to fixed staff addresses, so customer restock emails need Shopify Email marketing automations, Klaviyo, or a back-in-stock app.
Two different jobs get called "back in stock alerts," and most of the confusion in owner threads comes from mixing them up:
- Telling you that stock is back, so you restart ads, put the product back on the homepage and reply to people who asked.
- Telling your shoppers automatically, from a "Notify me" button on the product page.
This guide covers what owners say about both, and shows how to set up the first one for free in about 5 minutes.
Does Shopify tell you when something is back in stock?
Not by default. Shopify marks the variant as available again, but nobody gets an email. You find out when you happen to look, or when a customer asks.
That's why the question keeps coming up. In a January 2026 r/shopify thread titled "How do you guys keep track of 'out of stock' items?", the answers mostly pointed to Shopify Flow. One owner described a workflow that emails them when a product's inventory drops below 2, and another described a pair of Flow workflows: one that tags and unpublishes an item when it sells out, and one that removes the tag and republishes it when it comes back, emailing the owner when an item is unpublished.
Shopify Flow is free on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus, and its trigger list includes both Product variant out of stock and Product variant back in stock. You don't need an app to get the alert yourself.
Can Shopify Flow email my customers when an item is back?
Not directly. Shopify's own help page for the Send internal email action says: "You can't use variables to customize the email address to which the message is sent," and that the action "is best used to send emails to staff. To automate emails to customers, create a marketing automation."
A long Shopify Community thread, "How can I set up a 'Back-in-Stock' notification without external apps in Shopify?", shows how people hit that wall. The original poster, in April 2025, had already built a form on the product page and wanted Shopify to email shoppers automatically when stock returned. Several replies suggested saving signup emails on the product or variant and having Flow read them on restock. In July 2026 another member pointed out why that design stalls: Flow's internal email "won't accept a variable in the To field," so you can collect the list but "nothing in Flow can send to it."
The same member described a native route that can work for a small catalog:
- Use Shopify Forms (not the theme's contact form, which only emails your store address) to capture the shopper's email, the variant they want, and a real marketing opt-in.
- Use a Flow workflow on Metaobject entry created to create or update the customer and tag them with that variant.
- On Product variant back in stock, find customers with that tag, send them a marketing email, and remove the tag.
They were upfront about the trade-offs: it needs a little theme code to pass the current variant into the form, Get customer data returns up to 100 customers per run, and you end up hand-building deduplication, unsubscribes and delivery checks. Another member's view was blunter: if automatic shopper emails are worth it to you, pay for a tool built for them.
Should I just install a back-in-stock app?
If you want shoppers to sign up on the product page and get emailed automatically, an app (or Klaviyo's back-in-stock feature, which owners in the r/shopify threads recommend) is the honest answer. Many have a free tier with a monthly send limit, so check the current plan on each app's listing.
Before you trust any setup, test it. In a June 2026 r/shopify thread about Shopify's back-in-stock signup, one reply warned that a lot of "notify me" buttons "only collect something or notify the merchant," and suggested signing up with your own email, restocking the exact variant, and checking whether an email actually arrives.
If you don't get many stockouts, or you keep a short list of people who asked by email or DM, alerting yourself is usually enough. You get the moment, and you decide who hears what.
What should I do the moment something is back in stock?
From the owner threads, the same checklist comes up:
- Restart paused ads for that product. Owners pause ads when stock runs out and then forget to turn them back on.
- Put it back where you took it off: homepage, collections, or a sales channel you unpublished it from.
- Tell the people who asked. Reply to the emails or DMs, or email the customers you tagged.
- Remove any "sold out" tag or banner so your filters and collections are accurate.
- Check the count. If only a few units came in, say so, or you'll oversell your own announcement.
How do you build a back-in-stock alert in Shopify Flow?
This is the logic behind our Back-in-Stock Alert recipe, which passed a live test in our Shopify test store.
- In Shopify, open Apps → Flow and click Create workflow.
- Choose the trigger Product variant back in stock. It fires when a variant's quantity goes from 0 or less to above 0, so normal stock changes (5 to 8, say) don't trigger it.
- Add a Condition: the product's status is equal to Active. This skips draft products you're still setting up.
- Under Then, add Remove product tags with the tag
out-of-stock, if you tag sold-out products. Skip this step if you don't. - Add Send internal email. Enter your own email address and a subject like
Back in stock: {{productVariant.product.title}} ({{productVariant.title}}). - In the message, include the SKU and
{{productVariant.inventoryQuantity}}so you know how many came in, plus a short to-do list (ads, homepage, people who asked). - Click Turn on workflow.
To test it, pick an active product with Track quantity turned on, set one variant's available quantity to 0 and save, then set it to 5 and save. You should see a run under Recent runs and get the email. Then try the same on a draft product: the run should show the condition as false and send nothing.
Want the matching "it just sold out" step? Build a second workflow on Product variant out of stock that adds the out-of-stock tag and emails you. That way the tag is added when stock runs out and removed when it returns.
What are the limits?
- It emails you, not shoppers. That's how Flow's internal email works.
- Shopify has to track quantity for the variant. Untracked items never go "out of stock," so they never come back.
- One email per variant. If five sizes come back at once, you get five emails.
- Restocks that go through zero count. If a variant sits at a negative number (oversold) and you add enough to bring it above zero, the trigger fires.
Next step
Set up the alert, then decide how you'll tell waiting shoppers: by hand for a few items, or with an app if it's many. The Back-in-Stock Alert recipe is the tested workflow as a one-click import, about 5 minutes to install. It pairs well with a low-stock alert, which warns you before you sell out, and the Low-Stock Reorder Alert recipe. FAQ
Does Shopify notify you when a product is back in stock?
Not by default. You can set it up for free with Shopify Flow's "Product variant back in stock" trigger and a "Send internal email" action, which works on Shopify Basic and up.
Can Shopify Flow send back-in-stock emails to customers?
Not with its internal email action, which can't use a variable recipient address and is meant for staff. Shopify's help docs point to marketing automations for customer emails. Most stores use Klaviyo or a back-in-stock app for automatic shopper notifications.
Is there a free back-in-stock alert for Shopify?
For alerting yourself, yes: Shopify Flow is free and the workflow uses only built-in steps. For emailing shoppers automatically, many back-in-stock apps have a free tier with a monthly send limit.
Will the alert fire every time inventory changes?
No. The "Product variant back in stock" trigger only fires when a variant goes from 0 or less to above 0. A change from 5 to 8 doesn't trigger it.
Does it work for draft products?
Not with the condition in this guide. It checks that the product is active, so draft products are skipped.
Is this an AI agent?
No. It's an automation: a fixed rule that runs inside Shopify Flow every time stock comes back. It doesn't make decisions or contact anyone for you.
