Make vs Zapier vs n8n for Shopify: Which Should a Beginner Use?
For most Shopify beginners the answer is: start with Shopify Flow (free on Basic and up), and only add another tool when you need something Flow can't do on your plan, usually calling an AI model or an outside app. Then choose Zapier if you want the simplest setup and the most app connections, Make if you want visual multi-step scenarios on a tighter budget, and n8n if you're technical and want to self-host.
All three connect to Shopify and to AI models. The right one depends less on features and more on how comfortable you are with logic, and how many runs you'll need each month.
What does Shopify Flow already cover?
Before paying for anything, check whether Flow does the job. Flow is a free Shopify app on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. It handles:
- Alerts to you (Send internal email)
- Tagging products, orders and customers
- Holding risky orders, scheduled reports with Get order data, Count and Sum
- Running on events (order paid, stock changed) or on a schedule
What it can't do on Basic: the Send HTTP request action is only available on Grow, Advanced and Plus. Without it, Flow on Basic can't call an AI model or a web service. That's the most common reason to add Make, Zapier or n8n. See Shopify Flow examples for small stores for what Flow alone can do.
How do Make, Zapier and n8n compare?
| Zapier | Make | n8n | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Fastest setup, widest app catalog | Visual multi-step scenarios | Technical users, self-hosting |
| Learning curve | Lowest | Medium | Highest |
| Free option | Free plan with limits | Free plan with limits | Free to self-host (community edition); paid cloud plans |
| Shopify support | Shopify app with triggers and actions | Shopify app with modules | Shopify node and Shopify trigger node |
| AI steps | Built-in AI steps and OpenAI/Anthropic apps | OpenAI/Anthropic modules | OpenAI/Anthropic nodes and AI agent nodes |
| How usage is billed | Per task | Per operation/credit | Per execution on cloud; your own server cost if self-hosted |
Pricing changes often, so we haven't listed dollar figures. Check each vendor's pricing page on the day you sign up, and look closely at how AI steps count against your monthly allowance.
When should you choose Zapier?
Who it's for: owners who want something working in an afternoon and use lots of different apps (Gmail, Google Sheets, Slack, a helpdesk, an email platform).
Why: Zapier's step-by-step editor is the easiest of the three for non-technical people, and its app catalog is very large, so the tool you use is probably there.
What to watch: Zapier bills by tasks, and multi-step zaps with AI steps use more of them. A workflow that runs on every order can use up a small plan quickly. Estimate runs per month before you choose a plan.
When should you choose Make?
Who it's for: owners who are comfortable with a flowchart and want more steps per dollar.
Why: Make shows a scenario as a visual map of modules, which makes branching, loops and filters easier to see than in a linear list. It's popular for "fetch data → ask AI → write to a sheet → email me" jobs.
What to watch: every module that runs uses operations or credits, including loops over many items. A scenario that loops through 200 products runs those modules 200 times. Set scenarios to run on a sensible schedule rather than every few minutes.
When should you choose n8n?
Who it's for: technical owners, developers and agencies.
Why: n8n is source-available and can be self-hosted for free, so heavy usage doesn't scale your bill the same way. It has a Shopify node, a Shopify trigger, and strong AI agent features.
What to watch: self-hosting means you manage a server, updates, backups and security. The cloud version removes that work but is a paid plan. n8n assumes you're comfortable with data structures (JSON) and debugging.
What about using no extra tool at all?
A perfectly good option for a small store: let Flow do the scheduled data work and email it to you, then paste the email into ChatGPT or Claude with a saved prompt. It costs nothing extra, takes seconds a week, and you keep full control. Many of our starter recipes, like the Weekly KPI Brief and the Low-Stock Reorder Alert, work exactly this way.
Upgrading to Shopify Grow is another route: Flow's Send HTTP request action can then call an outside service directly.
How do you pick by situation?
- "I'm on Basic and just starting." Use Shopify Flow plus a pasted prompt. Don't pay for anything yet.
- "I want AI steps that run on their own, on a budget." Try Make's free plan.
- "I already use Zapier for other things." Stay on Zapier. One tool you know beats two you half-know.
- "I'm technical, or I run automations for clients." n8n, self-hosted or cloud.
- "I need it to work tonight and I'm not technical." Zapier.
How do you avoid surprise bills?
- Count runs. Orders per month × steps per run is roughly your monthly usage for an order-triggered workflow.
- Prefer schedules to per-event triggers for reports. One daily run beats 300 per-order runs.
- Filter early. Put the filter right after the trigger so non-matching runs stop before they use more steps.
- Cap AI output. Keep prompts short and ask for short answers.
- Set alerts for usage in the tool's settings, if it offers them.
What's our honest caveat?
Our recipes are built and live-tested on Shopify Flow first. We haven't finished testing Make, Zapier or n8n versions, so we don't claim they're "tested on" those platforms yet. Each recipe page lists exactly which platform it needs and what it costs before you buy.
FAQ
Do I need Make, Zapier or n8n to automate my Shopify store?
No. Shopify Flow is free on Basic and up and covers alerts, tags, scheduled reports and order holds. You need another tool mainly to call AI models or outside apps on Basic.
Which is easiest for beginners?
Zapier generally has the gentlest learning curve. Make is close behind if you like visual flowcharts.
Which is cheapest?
Self-hosted n8n has no license fee, but you pay for and maintain a server. Between Make and Zapier, compare current pricing pages against your expected monthly runs.
Can Shopify Flow call ChatGPT directly?
Only through Send HTTP request, which is available on Grow, Advanced and Plus. On Basic, paste Flow's output into ChatGPT yourself, or use one of these tools.
Should I use more than one tool?
Usually not at first. Use Flow for what's inside Shopify, and one external tool for everything else.
