How to Stop Bot and Fake Orders on Shopify (Manual Fix + Free Automation)
Bot and fake orders cost you product, shipping and chargeback fees. The goal is simple: catch them before you ship, without cancelling real customers by mistake.
Warning signs
- Shopify's fraud analysis on the order recommends Cancel or Investigate.
- A brand-new customer whose billing and shipping addresses don't match, on a larger-than-usual order.
- Many orders or accounts with the same generic name (in 2026 store owners on r/shopify reported a wave under the name "James Anderson").
- Odd emails (random letters), mismatched countries, or several orders in minutes.
How to fix it manually (free)
- Open each new order and read the Fraud analysis box before you fulfill.
- In the Orders list, filter or sort by risk so medium- and high-risk orders surface first.
- For anything suspicious, use Hold fulfillment on the order so it can't ship by accident, then contact the customer or cancel and refund.
- Turn on spam protection (hCaptcha) for your store's forms under Online Store > Preferences to cut fake accounts and contact-form spam.
- Keep an eye on your chargeback rate in Shopify Payments; a pattern of fraud disputes is what puts accounts at risk.
