Shopify Duplicate Orders: How to Catch and Combine Them Before Shipping
A customer clicks Buy twice, comes back an hour later to add one more item, or a bot fires repeat orders. If you ship each one separately you pay twice for shipping, or ship goods you'll have to refund.
Warning signs
- Two or more orders from the same email within a day.
- Identical line items and totals placed minutes apart.
- A customer email asking you to "combine my orders" or "cancel the duplicate".
How to fix it manually (free)
- In the Orders list, search by the customer's email to see all their recent orders together.
- Before fulfilling, sort open orders by customer to spot repeats.
- If it's an accidental double purchase, refund or cancel the extra order. If it's an add-on, pack both in one box and refund the extra shipping if you want to.
- Put the order on hold (Hold fulfillment) while you check, so your team or 3PL doesn't ship it.
How to automate it with Shopify Flow
Double Order Catcher waits 2 minutes after each new order (so Shopify finishes recording it), then checks for other orders from the same email in the last 24 hours. If it finds one, it holds fulfillment on the new order, tags it double-order and emails you the list. It never cancels or merges anything for you.
Shopify Flow is a free Shopify app on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. Install takes about 5 minutes:
- Open the Shopify Flow app and click Import, then choose the downloaded .flow file.
- Click Edit, open the Send internal email step, and replace you@yourstore.com with your email. Click Save.
- Click Turn on workflow.
Double Order Catcher
Spots the same customer ordering twice in 24 hours and pauses shipping so you can combine or check. Tested in a live Shopify store. $19 one-time.
FAQ
Does Shopify merge orders automatically?
No. Shopify keeps each order separate. You combine shipping by hand or with an app.
Why the 2-minute wait?
In our tests, a check run the instant an order arrives sometimes missed it because Shopify hadn't finished indexing it. Waiting 2 minutes made it reliable.
Does it work for guest checkout?
Yes, as long as the order has an email. Orders with no email are skipped.
